Moving the Printer to the Next Room

An architectural designer once complained about something small that, he said, annoyed him several times every day.

He owned a professional A3-format scanner for his design sketches and a large-format photo printer. Both devices used USB-B ports and had to stay connected to his workstation. The problem? His desk was small. Between the workstation, the two peripherals, and a 34-inch monitor, there was no room left for even a coffee cup.

He tried moving the PC under the desk. But then the original cables for the scanner and printer weren't long enough—the round trip from desk to floor required 2 meters, while the original cables were only 1.5 meters long. He bought a few standard USB extension cables, but the scanner would frequently disconnect when scanning large-format drawings, and the printer would occasionally throw "communication error" messages.

The solution I gave him was simple: one Phoossno USB-C to USB-B fiber optic cable, 10 meters long. One end connected to his PC (his newer workstation had a USB-C port). The other end connected to a desktop hub with a USB-B upstream port. The scanner, printer, and graphics tablet all plugged into the hub.

The PC was moved to a CPU holder under the desk. The desk surface now held only the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and the small hub. Scanning an A1-sized design sketch—a 1.2GB TIFF file—ran flawlessly from start to finish, without a single disconnect.

His comment was refreshingly practical: "I don't care if it uses fiber or copper. My desk is clean, and my gear just works. That's all I need."
