DisplayPort AOC is commonly used between professional workstations, graphics systems, processors and high-resolution monitors in editing suites, virtual production, image-analysis workstations and control rooms. Confirm DisplayPort version, resolution, refresh rate, DSC requirements and graphics-card compatibility.

USB Active Optical Cable

USB AOC may be suitable for compatible USB cameras, PTZ cameras, capture devices and imaging peripherals. Cables with the same connector do not necessarily provide the same functions.

· Confirm USB generation, data rate and connector type.

· Check camera power, driver and operating-system requirements.

· Distinguish data-only cables from full-feature USB-C products.

· Verify the exact cable model and required transmission distance.

IMPORTANT
A data-only USB-C optical cable should not be assumed to support display video output or device charging.

 

Selecting the Correct Cable Construction

Standard AOC

Suitable for protected indoor routes, studios, equipment racks and permanent installations where the cable is not exposed to frequent pulling or mechanical impact.

Armored AOC

Suitable for rental systems, live production, staging and routes involving repeated deployment or handling. Armor adds mechanical protection but does not automatically mean waterproof, outdoor-rated, crush-proof or fire-rated.

Detachable or Pure-Fiber Cable

Useful when the cable must pass through a narrow conduit, the connector opening is restricted or replaceable optical connections are preferred. Pure-fiber and hybrid AOCs can have different power requirements.

1. Why use an active optical cable between a professional camera and a control room?

An AOC can carry supported video or USB data over longer distances with less signal attenuation than a conventional copper cable. Its slim, lightweight construction can simplify routing in studios, venues and production spaces, while optical transmission provides strong resistance to EMI and RFI.

2. Should I choose HDMI, DisplayPort or USB AOC for a camera system?

Choose the cable according to the camera output and destination equipment. HDMI AOC is commonly used for compatible video outputs, DisplayPort AOC for supported workstation or monitor paths, and USB AOC for compatible USB cameras and control devices. Adapters can change compatibility, so the complete connection path should be reviewed.

3. Can an AOC support 4K, 8K or high-frame-rate camera output?

It can when the selected cable, camera output and receiving equipment all support the required signal format and bandwidth. Resolution alone is not enough: confirm refresh rate, color format, bit depth, HDR and HDCP where applicable. Test the intended production format before final deployment.

4. Does an active optical cable add latency to live production?

AOCs perform optoelectronic conversion inside the connectors and are designed for real-time signal transport. Avoid claiming absolute zero latency; actual end-to-end delay is determined mainly by the camera, switcher, converter, processing equipment and display. Validate the complete workflow when latency is critical.

5. Is an armored AOC suitable for live production and repeated handling?

An armored AOC can provide additional mechanical protection for routes that involve frequent setup, pulling or handling. It should not be described as waterproof or outdoor-rated unless the selected model has the relevant rating. Use strain relief, connector protection and proper cable management during production.

6. When should a camera project use detachable or pure-fiber solutions?

Detachable or pure-fiber designs can help when cables must pass through narrow conduits or when replaceable optical connections are preferred. Pure-fiber models may have different power requirements from hybrid AOCs. Confirm connector type, installation route, power arrangement and maintenance plan before selection.
