Those Six Screens in the Lobby

A marketing manager at a high-end shopping mall once did the math for me.

Their lobby had six digital signage screens for displaying brand events and promotions. Each screen required its own media player (a small PC like an Intel NUC) to drive the content. Six screens meant six media players. Every time she had to refresh the mall's promotional materials, she would walk from screen to screen with a USB drive to update each one. On a good day, it took 30 minutes. On a bad day—when one of the players had frozen—the time was unpredictable.

She asked me a simple question: "Can I just use one computer to control all six screens at once?"

Technically, yes. You'd connect the USB playback ports of all six screens to a single host PC. But the six screens were scattered around the lobby. The farthest was 12 meters from the potential host location, and the nearest was 6 meters away. Standard USB cables can't cover those distances.

The key was extending the distance. I placed a high-performance PC with six USB-C ports in a wiring closet. For each screen, I used a Phoossno USB-C to USB-B fiber optic cable—lengths varying from 6 to 15 meters depending on each screen's actual distance.

Now, all screen content is pushed from that single host PC. Changing a full set of promotional materials went from 30 minutes down to about 3 minutes—just update a folder on the host PC. The manager's memorable comment: "I don't need more expensive screens. I need a solution that doesn't require me to run around."
