The "Long Arm" in the Control Room
Aktie
Anyone who has worked on a factory floor knows it's not a comfortable place—loud, dusty, and sweltering hot in the summer.
Yet many quality control stations are located right there on the production line. Why? Because the industrial camera is connected to an industrial PC (IPC), and the IPC has to be close to the camera—otherwise, USB cables aren't long enough. So operators sit next to the noisy machinery, staring at inspection screens all day.
A client making automotive parts wanted to change this. They wanted to move all their industrial PCs into a separate, air-conditioned control room where operators could work remotely. But the nearest of their dozen production line cameras was 8 meters from the control room, and the farthest was nearly 15 meters away.
Standard copper USB cables couldn't handle it. And even if they could, the electromagnetic interference (EMI) from all those motors and VFDs (variable frequency drives) on the factory floor would render the image transmission unstable.
The solution they adopted: one Phoossno 15-meter active optical extension cable for each industrial camera. The cable ran from the camera (USB-B port) on the production line directly to the industrial PC (USB-C port) in the control room.
Fiber optics don't conduct electricity and are completely immune to EMI. For an optical signal, 15 meters is no different from 1 meter.
Now, operators work in a quiet, clean, air-conditioned control room. They can see real-time inspection feeds from every camera—crystal clear and with imperceptible latency. They nicknamed the setup "My Long Arm" —meaning they can reach out and touch a camera 15 meters away, and it responds as if it were right next to them.
